The Carso (Karst)
|
Trieste’s soul is tied to the Carso, which surrounds and embraces the city, creating a fascinating and mysterious world of underground caves, tunnels, stalactites and stalagmites. The Giant Cave is undoubtedly among the most staggering geological phenomena, large enough to contain the whole of St. Peter’s Cathedral. To fully enjoy the stark beauty of the land, the journey should start with the funicular tramway that leaves from Trieste and climbs up to the hinterland. The tramway (known as the "Tram di Opicina") was inaugurated in 1902 and provides breath-taking views along its route. Opicina is the final destination and, en route, passes by the Obelisk, built in 1830 to commemorate the opening of the road connecting Trieste with Austria. The tram is the only one left in Trieste and, apart from providing a regular service, is also a tourist attraction and another element in the history of Trieste to which the locals are very attached.
